The Christmas Cakes are a Coming

Another sleepless night last night thanks to the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. We started off by taking the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to the Railway Inn and The Victoria in Borth so that they could sing carols at the Mad Friday punters and collect some money. They did OK and the people of Borth gave generously, although as usual I’m not sure if that is because they were entertained by and enjoyed having the Scout sing to them or if it was just to get rid of us. The latter is the most likely!

We then walked them to the Youth Hostel where we had a party dinner and a sleepover. As you can imagine, as leaders Anna and I got no sleep at all.

We managed to get back home by 10am this morning though so have done very little all day really. I did manage to decorate one of our Christmas Cakes though. Since baking them back in October I have been feeding them with brandy to keep them moist and make them more ‘adult’ in nature. I covered the rectangular one in lovely thick marzipan last week and now that we’ve managed to source more of the rare almond deliciousness (everywhere in Aberystwyth seemed to have sold out) I’ve covered the larger round cake too.

I then made up some rich chocolate icing and smothered the rectangular cake in loads of the stuff. decorated it with some snow and some snowmen and it’s suddenly looking a lot more festive.

Next up is to cover the round cake in royal icing and decorate it. We have a bit of a plan in our minds to make it festive and fun ready for Christmas Day.
